Career choices with a Postgraduate Degree from Ukrainian State Medical Institution may depend on students’ professional and academic background. If graduates from Medical Courses already have existing medical qualifications, further postgraduate training allows them to specialize and perhaps move into a different area of medical practice.

Alternatively, a Master’s or Ph.D. in Medicine may be part of young medical workers’ route into the medical profession (combined with an appropriate undergraduate medical degree and practical training placements). Opportunities also exist in adjacent, non-clinical, fields. A degree from a Postgraduate Medical Course allows students to work in hospital management and administration, or help expand and promote the work of important medical charities with initiatives such as cancer research, organ donation, and global health efforts.

If students’ interests are more academic, a research-focused program in Ukrainian State Medical Universities could help prepare them for a Ph.D. and a career with a university medical department or research center.

All modern facilities are installed in laboratories and research institutions of Ukrainian State Universities and Academies. Postgraduate students are free to use all these facilities. Over 100 medical disciplines in Postgraduate or Clinical Residency programs are provided at Ukrainian State Medical Universities. All Ukrainian State Medical Universities provide internships, clinical residencies, and Ph.D. or Master’s programs.

Duration of Postgraduate or Clinical Residency programs

• Surgical: 3 years
• Non-Surgical: 2 years

After completing their Ph.D. or Master’s program, students are required to provide their thesis to a Committee from the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, according to the country of their study. All the programs and curricula are adopted by the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education of Ukraine. All Postgraduate programs at Ukrainian State Medical Universities are studied in English and Ukrainian languages.

To receive nostrification of a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree, all undergraduates are required to complete a one-year preparatory department before beginning their main course.

Ph.D. and Master Programs in Ukraine

Postgraduate study refers to an advanced level of study, beyond the level of a Bachelor’s degree. Postgraduate study is usually undertaken to gain more comprehensive knowledge within a particular area of a discipline, to develop new interests, or to start on a new career path. Postgraduate study can be completed either through postgraduate coursework or research.

Most Postgraduate Courses require a previous undergraduate qualification (Bachelor’s degree). Some can also be applied based on relevant work experience.

Students interested in pursuing their postgraduate/master’s or Ph.D. studies can apply at any time throughout the year, instead of waiting for the main admission period in September. PG and Ph.D. programs have no time limits.

Duration of:

• Master’s program – 1,5-2 years
• Ph.D. program – 3 years

Students are eligible to pursue their education at the Masters or Ph.D. level in a variety of fields, including Administration, Agriculture, Arts and Culture, Aviation, Civil Engineering, Economics, Engineering, Management, and Medicine, as well as many others. Depending on the course and student’s choice, education is provided in English or Ukrainian language.
