About University

 

Odesa National Medical University “ODNMU”  is the largest Medical University in Ukraine and one of the Oldest Medical Universities in Eastern and Western Europe.  Medical Faculty was opened on the 1st of September, 1900 in Odessa under the Great Russian Imperial University “Novorossysk University”. In 1922 Medical Faculty of Novorosisk University in Odessa was reformed and was given the Status of a Higher medical Institution and was renamed to “Odessa Medical Institute”. After the independence of Ukraine in 1993 Odesa Medical Institute was given the highest 4th level of Accreditation and was renamed “Odesa State Medical University” in 1997 got National status and was renamed “Odesa National Medical University”.

Odesa National Medical University “ODNMU” was the first among medical universities in Ukraine which got the National Status in Ukrainian Medical Universities. It is the most prestigious medical university in Russia, Ukraine, and Europe. The scientists of Odesa National Medical University made a great contribution to Ukrainian Medicine.

Odessa national medical university’s teaching staff consists of more than 1000 doctors. This is the highest number of Academicians working in the Medical University of Ukraine and in the whole of Europe.

Odessa National Medical University has 8 faculties, a medical college, and a Preparatory department for Foreign students. 58 theoretical departments and 45 Clinical departments work under Odessa National Medical University. Except for them, ODNMU has One University Multiple clinics, and one ODNMU dental clinic. Now more than 9000 students are training at Odessa National Medical University, among them, there are 1900 foreign students from 52 countries.

Accreditation and Recognition 

 

All our educational programs are regulated and approved by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and the Ministry of Health of Ukraine. The degrees and diplomas issued to graduated foreign students by the Odesa National Medical University “ODNMU” are legalized by the Ministry of Health of Ukraine and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.

Odessa National Medical University “ODNMU” is recognized by the World Health Organization, IMED, Indian Medical Council, Pakistan Medical and Dental Council, European Council of Medicine, General Medical Council (limited Registration) of the UK, and so on.

Odessa National Medical University “ODNMU” is recognized by the SADC council and there is no exam after completing your studies to start working in Southern African countries.

International Cooperation

 

Odesa National Medical University “ODNMU” has joint researches and partnership relations with many Scientific Institutions of the former USSR and all over the world, such as The Poland Medical Academy, The Cambridge University, The Virden University, Clinics of Urgent Medicine in Germany, Belgium, Austria, and Israel. Medical center of Cardiff (England), Medical Center in Sent-Etien (France), New York Medical Center, and Ukrainian Medical Society in Canada and Austria. 

During the last few years, our workers have had the opportunity to work abroad as specialists and teachers in the Universities of the USA, Yemen, Germany, the UK, etc. Odessa National Medical University “ODNMU” is proud of the fact that its workers were the scientists whose contribution to the world of Medical Science has been commonly acknowledged.

Odesa National Medical University started training students in the English language in 1993 and it was the first Medical University in Ukraine, Russia, and Eastern Europe which started training in English medium. Later on, a lot of other medical universities also started medical faculties in English medium.

Research Activity 

 

In recent years, ODNMU created unique scientific research and medical departments, which includes the ODNMU dental clinic, ODNMU multidisciplinary University Clinic, Research institute of Molecular-Genetics and Cellular Medicine, and Clinical Research Institute of Biophysics. With the help of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine at Odesa National Medical University, the following Diagnostics centers were opened: Cardio Hematology, Eye Microsurgery, Synthesis, Endoscopy and Laser Surgery, Pediatric cardiology, Toxicology, and others.

 Faculties and Specialties

GENERAL MEDICINE (MD / MBBS)

• Duration of Course: 6 years
• Degree Awarded: Doctor of Medicine (MD or MBBS). 

PEDIATRICS

• Duration of Course: 6 years
• Degree Awarded: Doctor of Medicine (MD or MBBS). 

DENTISTRY / STOMATOLOGY

• Duration of Course: 5 years.
• Degree awarded: Bachelor of dentistry (BDS). 

PHARMACY

• The duration of the pharmacy course is 5 years. 

NURSING

• The duration of the course is 2 years for a diploma and 4 years for a bachelor’s degree.
• The degree awarded is a Bachelor of Nursing. 

POSTGRADUATE EDUCATION: 

ONMU offers postgraduate studies in all medical fields. The duration of the study is 2-3 years.

PRE-MEDICAL COURSE:

This is a Russian-intensive program for students wishing to continue their studies at ONMU or any other University in Ukraine. The duration of the preparatory course is one year. Upon successful completion, a diploma is awarded.

FOUNDATION COURSE:

 This course is specially designed for foreign students who do not have the necessary requirements for undergraduate programs and also it helps to enable students to bridge the gap between school and University. The duration of the foundation course is 1 year.

The faculty of postgraduate education offers the study in 50 medical specialties at internship, mastership, and clinical internship. At the department of Odessa National Medical University (ONMU), along with the traditional ways of teaching, there is also a module study. A constantly developing base of computerized equipment gives the possibility to use modern PC know-how and world informative networks in the process of study.
