Maria Curie Skłodowska University was established three months after Nazi’s occupation ended in Lublin on October 23, 1944. A group of scholars from Lviv and scientists who survived the occupation of Lublin started to work in Lublin Catholic University, which used to specialize in humanist sciences.
It is named in honor of Marie Curie-Sklodowska. Currently the number of students is almost 36,000. The university has 302 professors (157 full professors), 231 habilitated doctors, 826 senior lecturers, and 1829 teachers in total. Total staff is 3628. To meet the growing demand for higher education, the university has established branches in other cities.

Lublin is the capital of the Lublin Region and the biggest town in Eastern Poland. Lublin’s Old Town is full of charm with its cobbled narrow streets and traditional style architecture and Renaissance burgher houses. Everything here is seeping with history and character. In fact, this area is sometimes referred to as “Little Krakow”. There are more than 100 historic mansions and other buildings to marvel at. For a different perspective, you can try the underground tourist trail, which visits old wine cellars and shop basements from various points in the city’s history to give you a more intimate look at the past and present ways of life in Lublin.
Maria Curie Skłodowska University offers accommodation in the following dormitories: Amor, Babilon, Femina, Grześ, Helios, Ikar, Jowisz, Zana and Kronos. Each segment (most of segments consist of two rooms) of the dormitory is equipped with: fully furnished and equipped kitchen (electric cooker with an oven, fridge, sink, furniture); fully furnished and equipped bathroom (shower, basin, automatic washing machine); separate toilet; household intercom. Each room is equipped with: furniture (wardrobes, beds, hanging cupboards, cupboards, computer desks, chairs, etc). Internet access is in each room. Also there are quiet learning rooms, TV room, entertainment rooms, and laundry.
Research, along with education, constitutes the most important sphere of university activity. UMCS conducts research at eleven Faculties and at the University’s interdisciplinary centers. These investigations bring numerous remarkable achievements and are the foundation for scholarly development of the academic staff. Every year ca. 40 doctoral and 20 postdoctoral degrees and 20 professorial titles are conferred at the University.
The university ambition is to meet the requirement of the HR Excellence in Research award. This is a token of recognition by the European Commission shown to institutions that implement a strategy for improvement of working conditions and facilitation of career development of researchers.
