Lithuanian University of Health Sciences was officially established in 2010 when the Kaunas University of Medicine merged with the Lithuanian Veterinary Academy. The University is the leading higher education institution for biomedical sciences in Lithuania, which offers high-level education focused on health, life, agricultural and veterinary sciences. The motto of the University is Health for the Fatherland.
LSMU consists of two main academies: Medical Academy and Veterinary Academy. The Lithuanian University of Health Sciences uses the Hospital of Lithuanian University of Health Sciences Kaunas Clinics and the Kaunas Red Cross Hospital as teaching hospitals which helps in providing practical knowledge. University also has homeopathy and pharmacy services.
There are more than 6,000 students enrolled in the different programs of the University. LSMU trains doctors, pharmacists, odontologists, nurses, and specialists in rehabilitation, public health, veterinary medicine, animal sciences, and other healthcare specialists.
Lithuanian University of Health Sciences is an active participant in the ERASMUS exchange program. The majority of ERASMUS partners are in Germany, Spain, France, Finland, and the other EU Member States.
The University is a member of numerous international organizations, such as the European University Association (EUA), The Association of Schools of Public Health in the European Region (ASPHER), The Association of Medical Schools in Europe (AMSE), Association for Medical Education in Europe (AMEE), Baltic Sea Region University Network (BSRUN), Organisation for Ph.D. Education in Biomedicine and Health Sciences in the European System (ORPHEUS), European Association of Establishments for Veterinary Education (EAEVE), World Veterinary Association, and more.
The study programs at LSMU meet university education standards applied in the EU countries, and graduates are eligible to take the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) and PLAB examination of the General Medicine Council in the UK.

Guests can try a range of cuisine from many European and Asian countries as well as an abundance of traditional Lithuanian food, drink, and hospitality.
Lithuanian University of Health Sciences housing facilities are available for students. The University has two hostels on-campus for first-year students. The upper-year students can go to the apartments and others stay in the city. The hostels have limited seats, so it’s better to apply for them early. The hostels provide furnished rooms with internet facilities. Students can also share a room to reduce their rent. The rent includes heating, water, power, internet connection, and use of a common kitchen. Pillows, blankets, and covers are provided too.
LSMU participates in the development of projects that result in new technologies, augmented scientific research and development as well as renewed and modernized infrastructure of the University. All classrooms are fully equipped with modern tech services.
Research facilities at the Academy include the Milking Training Centre; the Practical Instruction and Research Centre; the Teaching Farm, which issues healthy herd certificates; the Modern Cold Storage Farm (with teaching rooms); Large and Small Animal Clinics; the Laboratory of Livestock Carcass Classification; Mobile Ambulatory Clinics; and 12 research laboratories.
The University’s Library and Information Centre contains one of the most modern libraries in the EU, and it is listed in the Book of the Most Modern European Libraries published by the LIBER architecture group. The library has both virtual and RFID technologies and is very popular among foreign countries for its unique architecture and information systems.
