How to Get a Visa Hungary

dots-decorate--blue

Visa Requirements for EU Citizens

If you are a citizen of an EU country, the European Economic Area (EEA), or Switzerland, you do not need a visa to study in Hungary. However, upon arrival, you must register your stay with the Hungarian Immigration and Citizenship Office. This registration allows you to reside and study legally in Hungary for the duration of your studies.

Visa Requirements for Non-EU/EEA/Swiss Citizens

If you are not a citizen of an EU, EEA country, or Switzerland, you will need to apply for a student visa (Type D) at the nearest Hungarian consulate or embassy. It is essential to begin the application process immediately after receiving your Invitation Letter from the university. If your study program lasts more than one year, you will also need to obtain a residence permit upon arrival in Hungary. Edugain Overseas offers full support with both the visa application process and the renewal of your residence permit during your entire period of study.

Where to Apply for a Student Visa?

You must apply for a Hungarian student visa at the Hungarian embassy or consulate in your home country. It is not possible to apply for a student visa once you have already arrived in Hungary.

Required Documents for a Hungarian Student Visa

To apply for a Hungarian student visa, you will typically need the following documents:

  • Valid Passport;
  • Visa Application Form;
  • Passport-Size Photographs;
  • Medical Insurance;
  • Letter of Acceptance from the University;
  • Proof of Accommodation;
  • Proof of Paid Fee;
  • Proof of Financial Means.

The Hungarian authorities may request additional documents depending on your nationality and personal circumstances.

Processing Time

The student visa application process can take several weeks, so it is advisable to apply at least 1-3 months before your planned departure. Some applications may take longer due to additional document verification.

Residence Permit in Hungary

If your studies last longer than 90 days, you must apply for a residence permit after arriving in Hungary. This permit allows you to legally stay in the country for the duration of your studies. To apply, visit the Hungarian Immigration Office with:

  • Your passport;
  • A completed residence permit application form;
  • A certificate of university enrollment;
  • Proof of financial means;
  • Proof of health insurance;
  • Proof of accommodation in Hungary.

Once your residence permit is approved, you will receive a residence card that you must carry with you at all times.
