Saratov State Medical University named after V.I. Razumovsky is one of the oldest institutions of higher education in southern Russia. Emperor Nicholas II founded the Saratov State Medical University in 1909 as Saratov State University with only Medical Faculty, later in 1930 divided into Saratov State University and Saratov Medical Institute. In 1993 Saratov Medical Institute transformed into Saratov State Medical University. In 2009 Saratov State Medical University was named after First Rector V.I. Razumovsky. During its existence, the Saratov State Medical University has become one of the largest medical school in Russia. Since the foundation, the Saratov State Medical University has followed the classical system of medical education, including a strong theoretical basis in various fields. Every year more than 600 students come to Saratov State Medical University, and the total number of students is 5000. Currently, in Saratov State Medical University teaching is conducted in 75 departments by 798 skilled doctors, professors, and teachers. Over 100 years of existence the Saratov State Medical University has trained about 50 000 professionals.

Faculty of General Medicine
The Faculty of General medicine is the University’s fundamental and oldest faculty. From 1909 to 1930, it was the only acting faculty of Saratov University.
The General Medicine program is 6 years long and is taught at 48 departments according to the educational program conforming to the Federal State Educational Standard of Higher Education. There are currently 3 000 students, including 50 international students, pursuing a degree in General Medicine.
The Faculty of General Medicine employs highly qualified specialists, professors, and assistant professors. The Academic Council and the Dean’s Office manage the educational process and issues requiring collective discussion.
The Faculty of General Medicine is proud of its scientific schools that have received international recognition and are associated with the names of outstanding Russian physicians and healthcare specialists who have worked at the Faculty’s departments and hospitals. Among them were academicians S.R. Mirotvortsev, S.I. Spasokukotsky, V.I. Skvortsov, A.A. Bogomolets, A.A. Minkh; corresponding members of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR N.G. Kolosov, K.N. Tretyakov; State Prize winners Professors N.N. Ivanovsky, A.M. Antonov; the world’s first female professor of forensic medicine L.B. Leitman, and others. Among the teaching staff at the clinical departments, more than 400 people have the highest medical qualification grade.
Theoretical courses are taught at 6 special training and laboratory blocks; clinical courses are taught at university clinical facilities located in the leading healthcare centers of Saratov.
Scientific student clubs function at the departments of the Faculty; club members actively participate in medical competitions and scientific and practical conferences within Saratov State Medical University and other Russian and foreign universities. A graduate’s involvement in the student scientific community is an eligibility requirement for a residency or post-graduate program.
Important parts of the curriculum at the Faculty, academic and clinical placements help students to acquire practical skills. There are centers and classes for skills practicing available for students; rooms are equipped with modern training dummies, phantoms, and simulators, as well as with computer equipment with innovative training software. In the senior year of their program, medical students spend a considerable amount of time providing care at a patient’s bedside. Availability of contemporary modernized clinical base in four university hospitals enables to show the opportunities of modern medicine to the students.
The centuries-old traditions of medical training, modern and first-class clinical training base, experienced professors, and innovative methods of teaching are the foundation of success in preparing young modern competitive medical staff at the Faculty of General Medicine of Saratov Medical University.
Faculty of Pediatrics
The Faculty of Pediatrics of Saratov State Medical University, founded in 1930 as a Faculty for Maternity and Infancy Care, is one of the oldest in Russia. Over the years, more than 12 000 students have graduated from the Faculty of Pediatrics; now working as pediatricians not only in Russia, but also abroad. More than 1 200 students are currently studying at the Faculty.
The Pediatrics program is taught at 50 departments housed by Saratov State Medical University Clinics and large medical institutions of the city. Faculty departments of Hospital Pediatrics and Neonatology, of Faculty Pediatrics, Propaedeutics of Child Diseases, Child Endocrinology and Diabetology, Child Infectious Diseases, Polyclinic Pediatrics, and Pediatric Surgery — are the centers determining the priorities of providing medical and preventive care to children at the regional and interregional level.
The main clinical base of the Faculty is Block 4 of S.R. Mirotvortsev Clinical Hospital; all departments have educational units consisting of training and computer rooms. The Faculty Center for practical training is equipped with modern machines and training equipment. Students are provided with electronic textbooks, have free access to educational and tutorial resources in the SSMU educational portal.
One benefit of pursuing a degree at the Faculty of Pediatrics is that, apart from the general courses taught at all faculties, the Pediatrics program includes the study of children in health and disease; and the program graduates are qualified to work in any area of healthcare.
Expansion of professional competences obtained by students through innovative forms and methods of teaching, rapid response to changing customer requirements, and continuous advance training of the teaching staff are the core factors increasing the competitiveness of the Faculty of Pediatrics graduates in current conditions.
The most important condition for the professional development of students is to do active scientific research. Their research findings have been repeatedly awarded diplomas at interregional, all-Russian, and international forums.
Students of the Faculty are the winners of international pediatric competitions of CIS countries and the All-Russia Olympiad in Pediatrics. The student scientific club of the Pediatric Surgery Department is a permanent winner of All-Russia contests.
Faculty of Dentistry
The Faculty of Dentistry was founded in 1988. The Faculty follows the competency approach to specialist’s education; it presupposes the development of skills needed to begin independent dental practice. Learning outcomes include such areas of knowledge and expertise necessary to practice dentistry as knowledge and understanding of basic clinical and social studies, different aspects of social healthcare, population medicine, and medical ethics.
Since 2006, the Faculty has operated the Center for dentists’ practical skills development at the pre-clinical phase. The concept and education forms have been developed across all major courses in order to help students develop manual skills. The Center is equipped with modern dental phantoms, children and clinical simulators, visual aids, instruments, and supplies.
Over the years since the Faculty was founded, it has formed scientific schools in major areas of dentistry: dental implantology, periodontology, improving the effectiveness of dental treatment of diseases with somatic complications.
Students-dentists of Saratov State Medical University named after V.I. Razumovsky has won all-Russian and international competitions and has become prize-winners in contests for young scientists.
More than 100 Candidates of Medical Sciences and 7 Doctors of Medical Sciences degrees have been granted at the departments of the Faculty; the postgraduate department is working efficiently. The departments’ staff is carrying out several international and federal programs and grants, as well as projects commissioned by the Ministry of Healthcare of the Russian Federation. In the last 5 years, the teaching staff of the Faculty of Dentistry has received 42 invention patents.
The University Clinic of Dentistry is a big comprehensive healthcare facility providing comprehensive medical care and treatment for patients with complex pathologies. In recent years, the Clinic’s diagnostic capabilities have expanded significantly, the Clinic’s staff takes continuous training courses in the leading Russian and international training centers, which maintains the high quality of service they provide.
Providing medical and preventive care at the University Clinic of Dentistry involves the use of a wide range of modern technologies: dental implants, ferrule, and aesthetic prosthetics, dental restoration, treatment of dentofacial anomalies. The Clinic also houses specialized departments of the Faculty.
Faculty of Medical and Preventative Care
The Faculty of Medical and Preventative Care was founded in 2002. The Faculty’s program lasts 6 years and is taught at 40 departments. At the end of their program, graduates are granted the diploma of higher education with a major in Medical and Preventative Care and are qualified to work as epidemiologists, hygienists, bacteriologists, virologists, immunologists, and radiologists; they can also choose to have non-clinical medical positions (not connected with providing direct patient care).
The University campus, healthcare institutions of Saratov, Rospotrebnadzor institutions, centers for State Sanitary and Epidemiological Surveillance of the Russian Scientific and Research Institute for Plague Control “Mikrob”, and the Research Institute of Rural Hygiene house the Faculty.
Faculty of Pharmacy
The Faculty of Pharmacy is one of the youngest faculties of Saratov State Medical University named after V.I. Razumovsky. For over 10 years, it has been training highly qualified specialists with higher pharmaceutical education – pharmacists. The Faculty’s graduates are in high demand in various professional areas: production (pharmacy and pharmaceutical production), organizational management, control and licensing (licensing, certification, registration), outreach and awareness-raising (teaching and medical representative activities), research in the area of general pharmaceutical practice (pharmacy chains). The Faculty’s graduates have an almost 100 percent employment rate.
The Faculty of Pharmacy has its own modern training facilities (SSMU Block 6) where the major departments are located: the Department of Pharmaceutical Technology and Biotechnology, the Department of Pharmacology, the Department of General and Bioorganic Chemistry, the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, as well as a laboratory for research and quality control of medicines, equipped with modern analytical equipment (gas and liquid chromatography, UV spectrophotometer, infrared spectrometer, etc.). Students are able to use this equipment during practical classes and on-site practice. The Department of General Biology, Botany and Pharmacognosy (SSMU Block 2) operates a scientific and educational phytochemical laboratory and conducts research on the effects of drugs on biological objects.
The 5-year program includes 6 educational practices and 4 on-site practices (in botany, pharmacognosy, factory and drugstore pharmaceutical technology, quality control of dosage forms, standardization of plant raw materials, management, and organization of pharmacy). These practical trainings provide students with the knowledge and expertise necessary to work in any professional area.
Professors actively use progressive forms of instruction: situational and problem tasks, business games, competitions, inter-institutional Internet conferences. The Faculty’s teaching staff actively uses new information technologies, such as electronic textbooks, training programs, and video presentations, in the classroom.
The Faculty’s departments have modern equipment necessary to perform laboratory work on the level required by the State Educational Standard. The Faculty’s equipment is constantly brought up to date.
Many students of the Faculty conduct scientific research, participate in different conferences, publish their papers in journals and periodicals, and conduct experimental research projects. The most successful students defend thesis projects and complete the final stage of the certifying examination. The Faculty’s team takes part in Russian pharmaceutical competitions; after their debut in 2008 in Moscow, the team was awarded the first prize in the contest in Pharmacoeconomics.
Upon completing their program, graduates can obtain the basic specialty after a one-year internship program in Management and Economics of Pharmacy.
With the continuing growth of the pharmaceutical market, there is a lot of demand for qualified pharmacists. Following the federal development strategy for the pharmaceutical industry by 2020, the medical positions most in demand are specialists in the production of drugs, clinical research, pharma safety, pharmacoeconomics, and pharmacovigilance.
Faculty of Clinical Psychology
Saratov State Medical University has been offering on-campus and distance degree programs in Clinical Psychology since 2007, making it the newest program at SSMU.
The program requires 5.5 years to graduate, with the distance degree program taking up 6 years. There are currently more than 200 students pursuing this degree.
Clinical Psychology is a broad psychological specialty. Clinical psychologists find jobs in healthcare, education, and social work. They work on improving the psychological resources of their patients, helping them to adjust, harmonizing psychological development, they also prevent and treat disorders, and provide rehabilitation therapy.
Clinical Psychology is a branch of Psychology that utilizes theoretical insights of general psychology in medical practice: it studies all psychologically-based disorders and dysfunctions, analyzes the effect of a person’s relationship with his/her environment on his/her health and wellbeing, in order to diagnose, treat, and prevent such disorders.
SSMU’s program on Clinical Psychology is designed to ensure that its graduates are well-qualified to work with all types of people, be they adult or child patients, their relatives, and friends, people with disabilities, or the staff of hospitals and educational institutions. The program’s expectation is that, as practicing clinical psychologists, its graduates must be able to develop and maintain successful relationships with patients and their relatives/careers in order to prepare them for medical treatment and to give them the necessary psychological tools to overcome obstacles and succeed in life.
The program’s curriculum is a modern medical curriculum that integrates theoretical courses on general psychology and clinical psychology, and practical sessions. The curriculum places an emphasis on diagnostic techniques and methods of psychological manipulation. Students have access to modern labs on psychophysiology and psychodiagnozing. The curriculum also includes varied clinical experience, clinical seminars and placements in medical care and educational settings. This experience helps students develop practical skills of using diagnostic and psycho-corrective techniques in a real-life setting and promotes independent decision-making and successful professional collaboration.
Clinical Psychology offers wide-ranging career options. The program’s curricular outcomes prepare its graduates to become successful diagnosticians, therapists, consultants, psychologists working in preventive care and rehabilitation, as well as researchers and educators. They are employed in schools, special education schools, social care organizations, and healthcare centers.
Nursing Institute
SSMU started the Nursing program in 1997, and in 2004 it established the Nursing Institute. More than 1 500 people graduated from this program. Since 2012, the Nursing Institute has been admitting international students.
A degree in Nursing opens many career opportunities for young specialists with a college diploma who look for intellectual and professional growth.
The Nursing program is based on a new two-tier model of nursing education in Russia and includes a 4-year bachelor’s and a 2-year master’s program.
The bachelor’s program admits high-school graduates and college graduates. Admitted college graduates can complete their bachelor’s programs in less time.
The Nursing Institute provides quality education across 27 departments with the curriculum that includes 61 modern and highly integrated courses and uses innovative teaching strategies. International students can pursue their degree programs using different distance-learning opportunities.
Nurses offer expert help, care, and advice to different groups of patients, as well as work as expert care managers in a variety of clinical settings.
The Nursing Institute graduates get a Bachelor’s degree and have an opportunity to pursue a Master’s degree and a PhD. Upon completion of their post-graduate studies, graduates of the Nursing Institute can get a variety of leadership and management-level positions within the nursing and healthcare industries, as well as positions as nursing faculty or educators.
Faculty of Vocational Training and Professional Retraining of Specialists
Established in 1960, the Faculty of Vocational Training and Professional Retraining of Specialists (Continuing Medical Education) is one of the oldest medical faculties in Russia. The Faculty offers internship, residency, advanced training, and in-service programs for graduates and healthcare professionals.
The Faculty’s programs are set in Saratov State Medical University, as well as in different healthcare organizations of Saratov Oblast and other regions. The Faculty provides training to physicians and other healthcare professionals from all over Russia: the Kabardino-Balkar Republic, Mordovia, Penza, Tambov, Bryansk, Kaluga, Ulyanovsk, Astrakhan, Volgograd, Lipetsk, and Orenburg oblasts. Every year, about 4 500 physicians, interns, and resident medical officers undergo medical training at the Faculty.
The Faculty offers 68 programs taught across 58 departments with experienced and highly qualified faculty and staff.
The Faculty’s activities are offered in a number of teaching modalities: traditional (lectures, seminars) and modern teaching methods (role-plays, troubleshooting seminars, workshops, and conferences). Physicians undergoing training in clinical programs at the Faculty engage in case study sessions, watch educational videos, and use educational computer programs. Many departments deliver distance-learning programs using a variety of techniques and technologies.
Upon completion of a continuing medical education program, healthcare professionals are assessed using a three-part exam that tests how they can apply their knowledge with written tests, examines their practical and clinical skills in dealing with real clinical situations, and concludes with an interview.
The Faculty regularly conducts satisfaction surveys and collects feedback from enrolled physicians, interns, and resident medical officers. It also conducts polls among healthcare employers to assess their expectations and how healthcare professionals meet them. Based on the results of these surveys and polls, the Faculty constantly updates and improves its programs.
The rooms in all accommodation are large, bright and spacious with modern decoration and furnishings. You will share your room with one or two-person along with fully equipped bathroom and kitchen. All students rooms are furnished with beds, tables cabinets with lockers, and wardrobe. Also you there is 24-our security service and friendly reception staff.
Saratov is a large city located in the southeast of the European part of Russia, on the right bank of the Volga River. The capital of the Saratov region, it is located about 840 km south-east of Moscow. It is an important cultural, economic and educational center of the Volga region.
Saratov features
On the coat of arms of Saratov, you can see three silver sterlets meaning their abundance in the area. The sterlets, forming a Greek letter “epsilon”, symbolizes “the choice of a decent way of life at the crossroads.”
The city stretches for 34 km along the Volga. The central and southern parts of Saratov are situated in the valley, surrounded on three sides by low mountains of Volga Uplands: Sokolovaya (165 meters), Lysaya (286 m), Lopatina (274 m), Altynnaya (251 m ), Uvek (135 m). Urban public transport is represented by trams, trolleys, buses, minibuses, and taxi.
The city is known as a center of higher education, research, and scientific activities. Besides one of the oldest universities in Russia, there are over a dozen colleges in the city.
Saratov is an important industrial center of the Volga River area. Machine-building, oil and chemical industries are well developed. About 70% of the industrial production of Saratov is produced by large engineering plants.
Saratov attractions
Present Saratov combines the architecture of an old merchant town and modern city. At the same time, it is a city of universities, theaters, and museums. The historical center of Saratov consists of a number of buildings constructed in the late 19th – mid-20th centuries.
You can begin acquaintance with Saratov by strolling through the city center. Kirov Avenue with a lot of hotels is called “Saratov Arbat”. At the end of the avenue you will find a quiet and picturesque Lipki park, where you can relax after a walk through the city center.
On the famous Cosmonauts Embankment of Saratov, you can enjoy the beauty of the Volga River and will be able to walk over the bridge “Saratov-Engels” or take pictures near the Rotunda – the favorite place of the newlyweds in Saratov.
Chernyshevskogo Street is the longest street in Saratov stretching for 7 km along the Volga. The oldest building in the city is Holy Trinity Cathedral (1674-1695) located on Museum Square. The most massive building constructed before 1917 is the Volga railway administration building (Moskovskaya Street, 8).
Saratov registrar has probably the most elegant and beautiful building in the city (Volzhskaya Street, 22). The mansion was built in Art Nouveau style in 1901. The largest green area in the city is Saratov Park of Culture and Rest named after Maxim Gorky (October district) opened in 1935. The park covers an area of about 30 hectares.
Sovetskaya Street is considered one of the most prestigious in Saratov. It starts from Radishcheva Street and stretches to Astrakhanskaya Street. There are a lot of cultural monuments on Sovetskaya street.
The place where the first spaceman Yuri Gagarin landed, located about 16 km away from Engels, as well as Uvek, the remnants of an ancient town and a large center of the Golden Horde, located to the south of Saratov, are among the other sights.
