ABOUT UNIVERSITY

Samara Medical Institute Reaviz (Medical Institute Reaviz) is a private health institution of higher education in the Samara city of the Russian Federation. Samara Medical Institute Reaviz one of the first private medical schools in the country which received the license to conduct educational activities. Samara Medical Institute Reaviz also has branches in Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Saratov city. Samara Medical Institute Reaviz was organized in 1993. Today Samara Medical Institute Reaviz is a modern multi-level system of continuous training of specialists with higher medical, pharmaceutical, and humanitarian education from secondary schools to graduate. Currently, Samara Medical Institute Reaviz is a center of higher medical education that provides the best opportunities for quality training. Today Samara Medical Institute Reaviz has 162 teachers for 14 working departments. During its 18 years of existence, the Samara Medical Institute Reaviz has trained 9700 students.

Therapeutic department

The Therapeutic department of Medical Institute “REAVIZ” implements educational programs of higher vocational education with a specialization in “General Medicine”. The Department was opened in 1993. Lectures and practical sessions in humanities and in social and economic subjects, in natural science, in mathematical, in biomedical subjects are conducted on training premises of the Institute, located at the address: 100, Chkalov street. Lessons of physical culture are given on the stadium “Locomotive”: in a swimming pool and in gyms. Sessions in vocational and specialized subjects are taught in medical clinics of the city which had signed agreements on uncompensated use.

Forms of studying:

• Full-time course
• Extra-mural course
• The individual form of studying. “One-to-one” tutorials are given or students join together to study certain subjects of their individual curriculums as parts of a fluctuating group of 2-3 people.

Training is conducted according to the State educational standard, which provides for studying of compulsory and elective courses of humanities, of social and economic subjects, of natural science, of mathematical and biomedical subjects, and also vocational and specialized subjects. Lecturers have all required methodological support for the teaching process (curriculums, study guides for lecturers and students, sets of tests, etc.).In the process of training as a doctor it is very important for students to take part in an introductory internship, so after the second year of studying students work for 4 weeks as assistants of the ward and medical treatment nurses. Students should become familiar with the medical procedures which are performed by practicing nurses in hospitals. After the third-year students of the Therapeutic Department work for 144 hours as assistants of an ambulance or an emergency nurse practitioner. After the fourth year students act as clinical physicians for 216 hours. This introductory internship includes 72 hours of work in a unit for patients with internal diseases, 72 hours of work in a surgical unit, and 72 hours of work in an obstetric unit. The level of practical experience which students acquire in the introductory internship, in practical sessions in clinics and also during independent work (follow-up of a patient) is later assessed at the time of the State Final Certification of graduates.

Dentistry department

Our department was opened in 1994 at the Samara State Medical University at the initiative of some outstanding medical academicians of the Samara region: Academician of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences A. F. Krasnov; Academician of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences G. P. Kotelnikov and Professor I. P. Balmasova.Since that time more than 460 highly professional specialists have graduated from the Department. Nowadays there are 270 students at the Dentistry Department.Training period of a full-time course is 5 years; the training period of an extra-mural course is 5 and a half years. The leading Chair for the Dentistry Department is the Chair of Dentistry. Its Holder is Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor A. V. Shumsky. The lecturers of the Chairwork in five main scientific fields: restorative dentistry, dental surgery, prosthetic dentistry, pediatric dentistry and preventive care of dental diseases. The main scientific areas of research are aspects of immunology in dentistry, periodontology, cell technologies.In their second year of studying students start to become acquainted with the foundations of dentistry.  There is a special classroom equipped with anatomical models and dummies on which students sharpen their skills. In advanced years of studying students learn directly at the dental chair in dental care clinics and in dental departments of municipal out-patient clinics. All students can also attend the following facilities: LLC “Medguard”, LLC “Training and treatment center of Professor Shumskiy”, LLC “Dentistry center of Doctor Muzyka”.Every year students of our department take an active part in research and practice conferences where they deliver reports and present their own observations and scientific researches.The lecturers of the Dentistry Chair hold with students a magazine club. The object of it is to analyze and understand international researches, to review methods of treatment of dental diseases in foreign clinics.To improve their communication skills students use in the study process a video course “Doctor’s advice”. It helps them to build contact with a patient, to define a genuine cause of a disease, to improve their ability to examine a patient; they discuss the diagnosis and disease prognosis.Apart from special subjects students improve their knowledge of social science, political science, sanology, information technology, etc.After 5 years of studying there is the State Final Certification of graduates in accordance with the State educational standard of higher medical education. The graduates are assigned the qualification of a dentist and are issued a diploma. Graduates of our Department take the medical oath in public. This is the expression of loyalty to their profession.

Samara Medical Institute Reaviz has a well-developed dormitory system, which includes 3 hostels 5 story each. Totally dormitory complex is for 3000 students. Rooms are maximum for 3 person, they are comfortable and very well-furnished.

 ABOUT THE CITY

Samara is the ninth-largest city in Russia and the administrative center of Samara Oblast. Some statistics indicate that it is the eighth or ninth-largest city by population, rather than sixth. It is in the southeastern part of European Russia at the confluence of the Volga and Samara rivers, on the east bank of the Volga which acts as the city’s western boundary; across the river are the Zhiguli Mountains, after which the local beer (Zhigulyovskoye) is named. The northern boundary is formed by the Sokolyi Hills and by the steppes in the south and east. The city covers 46,597 hectares (115,140 acres), with a population of 1,164,685 (2010 Census); the metropolitan area of Samara, Tolyatti, and Syzran has a population of over 3 million. It is about 300 kilometers (190 mi) from Kazan, 410 kilometers (250 mi) from Ufa, 340 kilometers (210 mi) from Saratov, and 235 kilometers (146 mi) from Oral, Kazakhstan.

Formerly a closed city, Samara is now a large and important social, political, economic, industrial, and cultural center in European Russia and hosted the European Union—Russia Summit in May 2007. It has a continental climate characterized by hot summers and cold winters. The life of Samara’s citizens has always been intrinsically linked to the Volga River, which has not only served as the main commercial thoroughfare of Russia throughout several centuries but also has great visual appeal. Samara’s riverfront is considered one of the favorite recreation places both for local citizens and tourists. After the Soviet novelist Vasily Aksyonov visited Samara, he remarked: “I am not sure where in the West one can find such a long and beautiful embankment.”
