About the University

 

The Medical University of Silesia is the largest medical school in Poland. It has been established on the 20th of March 1948. The Medical University of Silesia offers five schools in 16 fields of study focused on preparing specialists for work in various communities and the national health care system. 

The Medical University of Silesia provides education to over 9000 students, including Ph.D. and postgraduate students. The University conducts medical classes in English for students from all over the world. The University offers various forms of international cooperation programs with foreign research centers and universities worldwide.  The Medical University of Silesia cooperates with over 80 foreign universities, including Great Britain, the Czech Republic, Italy, and Sweden. This cooperation concerns the exchange of students, the exchange of information in the field of teaching programs as well as the exchange and training of teaching staff.

The Medical University of Silesia is accredited by the Polish Accreditation Committee and recognized by the World Health Organisation through the World Directory of Medical Schools. The university is equipped with modern medical laboratories to develop outstanding research programs and ensure educational and scientific development.

SUM cooperates with over 80 foreign universities, including Great Britain, the Czech Republic, Italy, and Sweden. This cooperation concerns, inter alia, the exchange of students, the exchange of information in the field of teaching programs as well as the exchange and training of teaching staff. The university has established contacts and cooperation with numerous leading national and foreign centers, with which it conducts joint research and exchange of experiences.

The high level of classes at the Medical University of Silesia in Katowice is guaranteed by over 1,300 academic teachers, including approximately independent research and teaching staff. The knowledge and qualifications of SUM employees are appreciated both in Poland and in the world, many of them receive honorary doctorates honoris causa, and sit in the authorities of European and Polish scientific societies.

The Medical University of Silesia offers 70 programs in 240 medical specializations every academic year to help students meet the challenges across the society and labor market.  Studies in English were established in the following fields: medicine and dentistry, pharmacy and medical biotechnology, physiotherapy, nursing, obstetrics, public health, and dietetics. The Medical University of Silesia in Katowice educates doctoral students and offers education in Postgraduate studies, as well as training and specialization courses.

Accommodation 

 

The Medical University of Silesia in Katowice offers accommodation for students at the dormitory located on the campus, within a walking distance from the basic science buildings in Katowice-Ligota. 

All the rooms are fully furnished and ensured with modern conveniences like cold and hot water, electricity, free Wi-Fi, central heating during the winter period, etc. There is laundry, kitchen, library, TV room, assembly hall, and gym available every day of the week. The dormitories are totally safe, owing to the surveillance cameras and strict pass system. The outdoor territory is surrounded by supermarkets, cafes and coffee bars, banks, and sports centers. 

Student Life in Katowice

 

Katowice is the main city of Upper Silesia – a historical part of Poland. Katowice City has plenty of green spaces and parks such as Silesian Culture, Refreshment park, Tadeusz Kosciuszko Park, and Zadole park which are tourist attractions of the city.

Today Katowice’s city center is packed with modern architecture, and filled with cafes, restaurants, pubs, and clubs to match all tastes. Those seeking more conventional interpretations of the word ‘attraction’ will find plenty of cleaned-up 19th-century architecture in the form of handsome townhouses in Downtown Katowice. One of the best museums in southern Poland is the Silesian Museum, on the site of the former Katowice Coal Mine, which today forms the city’s, Cultural Zone. 

Speaking of entertainment, Katowice is a big international center for theatrical and stage events. The city hosts music festivals such as the Rawa Blues, the Tauron New Music Festival, the Silesian Jazz Festival, and the Mayday Festival, which attract hundreds of thousands of visitors. The nightlife is Katowice, one every student should enjoy. There’s no shortage of clubs and other places of interest where you could enjoy some free time away from studying.
