the Semen Kuznets Kharkiv National University of Economics is the largest economic higher educational institution in Eastern Ukraine. It’s a state-owned higher school of IV-level accreditation and belongs to the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine. In 2013 the University is named after Simon Kuznets, its’ noted alumnus.

The teaching process is provided by a teaching staff of 650 people, including 49 doctors and 411 candidates in science. There are 7 faculties, 35 departments, the department of correspondence, distance, and postgraduate education, post-graduate and doctoral studies, special councils for the defense of dissertations, and research and training laboratories. Scientific journals “Economics of Development” and “Development Management” are published. Together with NDC of Industrial Development Problems of KhNEU. S. Kuznets is a co-founder of the Business-Inform magazine. All magazines are professional editions of economics.

KNUE provides a full range of educational services implementing multistage training, retraining, and upgrading of specialists in 22 specialties in the following fields: economy and business, management, government, computer sciences, publishing business and printing industry, tourism, on three qualifying levels: training bachelor, specialist (bachelor)and masters.

History

 

The Kharkiv National University of Economics is connected by direct historical continuity with the Kharkiv commercial school of Emperor Alexander III (1893-1919), Kharkiv higher commercial courses of the Kharkiv merchant society (1912-1916), Kharkiv Commercial Institute (1916-1919) and the Kharkiv Institute of a National Economy (1919-1930).

The official date of creation is October 1, 1930, when it was formed on the basis of the industrial faculty of the Kharkiv Institute of a National Economy as the Kharkiv Engineering and Economic Institute. It prepared experts specialized in engineering and economic analysis for the key branches of the heavy industry of Ukraine and the USSR on machine-building, metallurgical, chemical, and forge faculties. In 1964 the faculty of the mechanized processing of economic information was founded; the economics faculty was formed in 1970.

The institute rendered wide advisory help to industrial enterprises on reconstruction, technological updating, an increase of labor productivity and economic efficiency of manufacture, cost-effectiveness analysis, and, since 1960, on the organization of automated control systems (management information systems). During this period the institute created an advanced system of retraining and improvement of the professional skill of the supervising personnel of the industry.

At the institute a number of research laboratories operated, including the research laboratory of economy and organizations of the machine-building industry of the Kharkiv economic region under the scientific management of Prof. E.G. Liberman. Its research was assumed as a basis for economic reform in 1965 in the USSR.

International Cooperation

Kuznetsa actively uses the opportunities and advantages of membership in international associations such as the Magna Charta Consortium (2004), the Association of Economic Universities of Southeastern Europe and the Black Sea region (2008), the Association of European Universities (2009), the University Francophonie Agency (2009), the International the Institute of Administrative Sciences and the International Association of Schools and Institutions of Administration (2013), the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), and others.

The World Bank’s Innovation Knowledge Center and the Information Center of the European Union, the Center for University Achievement with the support of the Ufa Bureau of Eastern and Central Europe (Bucharest, Romania) have been opened on the basis of the scientific library.

The University is active in international activities on the basis of more than 80 signed cooperation agreements with higher education institutions and organizations in Europe and in the world. University provides professional development for foreign citizens of all previously mentioned specialties in the form of probation and retraining. Candidate (Ph.D.) and Doctor of Science courses are available at the University. Post-graduate course duration is 3 years followed by thesis defense and degrees of Ph.D. in Economics are awarded.
